How ironic, freezing to death on a tropical island.
[ their clothing is soaked through, laid out on some rocks that used to be sunny and hot. now they're about as cold as the water lapping at the shore, as cold as kaeya's skin as he reaches to test and see if his shirt is dry enough to put on. fingertips brush the fabric of his shirt and he immediately pulls back, a discontented sound. freezing. no thanks. he's discarded everything but his pants and every moment that passes makes him feel more and more like some rugged castaway.
hm. piratey, he supposes.
one would think being gifted a vision of cryo would make one immune to the cold. unfortunately, such is not the case and kaeya returns his fingers to the tight pocket of his arms, looking at the circle of rocks he's created for whatever wood diluc is scrounging up. he groans loudly, hoping maybe the wind will carry it to diluc's ears. ]
This isn't exactly how I wanted to go, but at least I'm not alone!
[ he means it, not an ounce of discontented syrupy fake sweetness behind it. he looks around, tries to find some sort of flash of red or indication of diluc returning with his findings. when he can't see anything, he turns to his small bounty of fish he's patiently caught, all of them on ice for now--dinner if diluc can start a fire for them.
he frowns, tightening his hold around himself. ]
How hard is it to find sticks? [ he says, kicking at some sand, sifting through it with a toe tip and unearthing a small shell in the process. ]
[ this was...a mess, to say the least. what started as a lead on new fatui activity, or so he thought, has quickly turned into one of diluc's worst nightmares. being trapped on a strange island with the last person he'd ever want to be trapped with. maybe that was cruel thinking, but even that annoying bard would be better than this...
it was kaeya, of all people, who he was here with! the same kaeya whom he used to know better than anyone else, who knew him better than anyone else! the kaeya who was by his side for so many years...who now is not and has taken over as calvary captain. this kaeya he does not know, because he has not made it his business to know.
maybe this was karma. divine punishment.]
Hmm... [ he sighs, disappointed in the small bundle of twigs and brush he's collected in his arms. surely kaeya is freezing by now, since they both had to strip down to their undergarments, after falling into the ocean. oh right, that's how they got stranded here in the first place!
...it was kind of diluc's fault that kaeya's ice bridge melted from under them. he'll keep beating himself up over that later. for now he headed back to where he had left the captain. ]
Stop your moaning. There wasn't much to collect, but it will have to do. [ he sets the small bundle down, arranging it perfectly enough, before snapping his fingers and lighting it. the flame was small, but the warmth it gave off was mighty, thank you pyro vision.
diluc sat there for a moment, near enough to the other so his own body heat could radiate outwards. hopefully this helped.]
[ kaeya has truthfully long since forgiven diluc for the melting of his ice bridge. he should have worked faster, he should have known that diluc probably goes through ice the way that he goes through alcohol himself--quickly and far faster than he realizes. it's unfortunate, sure, being stranded out here, but as he watches diluc come back with his meager findings.
still, it's enough, and as he snaps the fire to life, kaeya immediately melts towards it, shivering profusely. ]
So handy! Thank you... I'll go out in a bit, see if I can cut loose anything to feed it.
[ an offering as he stretches his palms out towards the flames and sinks into the sand, just close enough to try and warm himself, far enough that he doesn't accidentally burn himself. it does seem like he tempts the flame regardless, stretching just close enough to kiss it with his fingertips before curling them back to the safety of his palms. ]
There are some fish I was able to catch. Not that many, but... it should do for tonight. [ he nods his head towards the iced fish sitting on a rock. ] What do you think?
[ kaeya has tried not to care what diluc thinks anymore, but the words somehow slip free between the chattering of his teeth. ]
[ diluc doesn't look at him, he hasn't since he left to get materials, he can't look kaeya in the eye. he does, however, give a nod to acknowledge the other at least, he isn't heartless after all. (though some might argue that from time to time.)
of course this doesn't last long, not with the constant chattering of teeth and with how much kaeya is shaking next to him. that he could see that from his peripheral.
it was when the fish was mentioned that he finally turned in that direction, freezing as he, once again, saw the scar that spread across kaeya's shoulder. diluc snapped his gaze back to the fire.] It's a good catch, but I am not hungry...please, eat your fill.
[ the guilt crashed over him like a tidal wave and immediately killed what little appetite he had. he hadn't seen that wound in years, not since the night he put it there. ]
[ kaeya can feel diluc staring. it's not hard, his eyes are expressive and warm and obvious. the stretch of the scar has never quite gone away, keeping kaeya always aware of it in the worst situations, like this. mostly this. only this. he rubs it absently.
he wishes he weren't cold on top of everything else he's feeling now, a mess of emotions that diluc most likely wants nothing to do with. it figures they would invade kaeya's mind now, in the worst of times when he's as vulnerable as can be.
damn it. ]
Besides, they'll just go to waste, I caught too many. [ he settles closer to the fire. ] Come on, Diluc... don't make me the one with common sense now. I hate having to beg.
[ he wasn't sulking, stupid kaeya. maybe be just wants to be alone with his own thoughts, instead of eating...no no that was definitely incorrect. diluc hated being alone with his thoughts and right now was especially bad.
sighing. ] Sir Kaeya, please do refrain from begging. It is a nuisance.
[ there it was, the playfulness they would always fall into. diluc stood and went to retrieve the fish, coming back with a stray stick he found hiding beside the rock. now with two skewered fish he went to work roasting them in the fire, using his vision to control the flame. ]
Eating will help to warm you up, here. [ he handed kaeya one of the fish, taking the other for himself. the silence was so loud. ]
[ the fish smells incredible up close and as diluc hands him a skewer their fingers hover close enough to graze if kaeya weren't always so hyperaware of how close he is here in this moment. diluc is warm, he's always so fucking warm and kaeya wants to lean into it, follow it. like a firefly.
he takes a few mouthfuls, but hates the silence too much to stay quiet for very long. ]
Rare that I get to have your cooking anymore. [ lol it was just fire, he makes sure the sentiment is there in his voice and in his brow, lifted high. ]
Should get stranded on islands more often. [ is it meant to be a dig? no, just a softer reminiscence that slips out of kaeya here in a vulnerable place beside the fire, shivering with a warm belly full of fish. ]
[ diluc couldn't help but roll his eyes at that, but also kaeya wasn't wrong...so annoying. it was almost impressive how far the captain could get with that smile and smooth talking, not that he'd ever say that out loud. he wasn't a fool.
ah yes, of course the silence wouldn't last too long, but maybe diluc was thankful for the break in it? or maybe not.] You're going to stay shivering, if you keep talking so much. [ well that was a bit of a rude dig, sir.
a few seconds passed after that statement and diluc felt a twinge of guilt, able to feel the change in energy. so he shifted closer to kaeya, channeling his fire and pushing it out. he is a portable space heater! ] Just...let me know if it's too hot.
for ninya.
